Fantastic Fox
Frank Hanswijk
Seeing foxes wandering the streets isn’t unusual in Rotterdam, a city in the Netherlands. But this fox stands out from the crowd. It’s 52 feet long and a plastic bag dangles from its mouth. It’s a sculpture by Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman, who creates scaled-up animals in cities around the world. This sculpture, named the Bospolder Fox for the neighborhood it calls home, peers over an intersection and is used as a meet-up spot and a place for kids to play. Hofman hopes the sculpture reminds residents to be welcoming to newcomers, both animal and human.
The average red fox is 20 inches tall at the shoulder and 55 inches long from nose to tail-tip. The Bospolder fox is proportional to a red fox. How tall is it at the shoulder, rounded to the nearest tenth? Record your work and answer on our Numbers in the News answer sheet.
