Realistic Robot

Meet Fred. Fred makes eye contact with you while he talks, recognizes people’s age and gender, and can even pick up on facial cues. He’s the one on the left—the robot. He’s a Mesmer, a type of super-realistic humanoid robot made by a company in the United Kingdom called Engineered Arts.

Unlike most robots, which perform simple and repetitive tasks, Mesmers are designed to be as expressive as possible. They can be operated like a puppet using animation software on a laptop from anywhere in the world.

Most of the robots Engineered Arts makes are used for entertainment purposes. They’re used at tourist attractions worldwide, such as Madame Tussauds wax museums and amusement parks.
