A Long Way From Home

Last fall, all eyes were on New York City’s Central Park. People flocked to one of the park’s ponds hoping to catch a glimpse of the city’s hottest celebrity: a Mandarin duck.

Like the name suggests, Mandarin ducks are normally found in China and eastern Russia. They live in shrubby areas around rivers and lakes. Female Mandarin ducks are a soft-brown color. But male Mandarin ducks—like the one in Central Park—have gold, blue, and purple feathers. Their vibrant plumage earned the species the title of the world’s most beautiful duck.

No one knows where the Central Park Mandarin duck flew in from. But his adoring fans hope he’s here to stay!
