In 2003, David Harasti saw a new type of pipefish off the coast of Papua New Guinea that looked like Mr. Snuffleupagus from Sesame Street. He decided if he saw it again, he’d name the fish after “Snuffy.”
Twenty years later, Harasti and colleague Graham Short found the fish in Australia’s Great Barrier Reef! “You release this tension,” says Short. “That’s when you scream with joy.” They named the fish Solenostomus snuffleupagus!
