You’ve probably seen an army of enormous skeletons popping up in front yards this month. Since it debuted in 2020, the 12-foot-tall skeleton named Skelly has been the star of Halloween displays across the U.S.

“When we set out to create Skelly, we knew he would stand out,” says Aubrey Horowitz. She works on decorative holiday merchandise for Home Depot, which sells Skelly. “But the level of excitement and engagement around this item has been incredible.”

Skelly is more than double the height of an average adult!

Not even the frighteningly large price tag of $299 could stop it from flying off shelves. The massive decoration has sold out every year! Many people have spent a lot of time hunting one down. It took Kelly Sue DeConnick, a writer who lives in Oregon, two years. “They were hard to get,” she says. “I went so far as to see if a friend in Los Angeles could pick one up and ship it to me!”

Not everyone can find—or afford—a giant skeleton of their own. But that doesn’t mean they can’t join in the fun. Sharing ideas for low-cost, high-impact decorations is content creator and Halloween superfan Miranda Enzor’s specialty. She uses balloons and crepe paper to amp up her home’s Halloween spirit while sticking to her budget. “Part of the fun of decorating for any holiday is the creation process,” she says.

What about those who want to upgrade their Skelly this year? They can pick up the LifeEyes Conversion Kit. It has eye animations that you can program to look like Skelly is watching you! “Accessory kits let owners make their displays their own,” says Horowitz.
