WHAT ARE TAXES?

Taxes are payments made to federal, state, or local governments. People pay taxes when they buy products, work, or own property. Taxes on goods like gasoline are a “user fee” and can be used to pay for public services. Many gas taxes go toward maintaining roads and highways.

WHAT DO TAXES PAY FOR?

Federal taxes go to programs that benefit the public—everything from education to defending the country to scientific research. Federal taxes also help pay for programs that the elderly, disabled, and low-income households depend upon, like Social Security and Medicare.

State taxes pay for building and maintaining roads, bridges, and other infrastructure. They also fund public schools as well as local police forces and fire departments that protect communities.

WHAT ARE TARIFFS?

Tariffs are taxes on certain items imported from another country. Products that have tariffs will usually be more expensive because of the tax, since companies often pass that cost on to consumers. Reducing high tariffs was one reason Congress passed an amendment to the Constitution allowing to create a federal income tax in 1913.
