Every spring, herds of sheep in the rolling hills of northern Italy set out for fresh pastures. For adult sheep, the trek takes up to 20 days. But baby lambs aren’t strong enough to walk that far. So they hitch a ride with a donkey!
Known as “donkey nannies,” these animals wear special saddles with pouches where young lambs can rest safely. As shepherds guide the flocks across the rocky mountains, the donkeys carry their passengers with care. This centuries-old tradition of migrating herds, called transhumance, is an important part of Italy’s farming heritage.
