New York City’s Central Park is the perfect place to enjoy a pizza picnic. But New Yorkers love pizza so much, their pizza picnics were causing a problem: a pizza box pileup! That’s because pizza boxes are too big and square for the circular openings of regular trash and recycling bins.

Leaving leftover greasy boxes on the ground creates litter and can attract rats. So this past summer, the Central Park Conservancy, the organization in charge of the park, introduced specially designed pizza box recycling bins. The group hopes that the new pizza box bins will “recycle more effectively and send fewer materials to landfill waste,” says a spokesperson from the Central Park Conservancy.
