Before their Thanksgiving feast, thousands of people race in Turkey Trots across the U.S. But did you know that this tradition is more than 125 years old? The first Turkey Trot was hosted in 1896 by the YMCA in Buffalo, New York. Six participants ran the 5-mile-long race, but only four of them crossed the finish line!

Now up to 14,000 racers in Buffalo alone gather in funny costumes to exercise before the big meal and raise money for their community.

“The community spirit behind the whole thing is what makes this event truly magical,” says Michael Baggerman, communications director for the Buffalo YMCA.
