THE KIDPRENEUR FILES

MATH asked Joah Blair about his business making and delivering custom milkshakes on Bainbridge Island, Washington

Dinah Satterwhite

NAME: Joah Blair
AGE: 14
BUSINESS: Blair Shakes, founded 2022
STATE: Washington

Scholastic: Why did you start your business?
Joah: On a hot day last summer, I didn’t have anything going on. My grandparents have a milkshake machine from the 1960s, so I borrowed it and made milkshakes for my family. Later, I was joking around with my dad, who is a web designer, about making a website and delivering milkshakes. And he said, “We can make that work.” So we did!

Scholastic: What’s the best part of running your business?
Joah: I love biking around the island to deliver milkshakes—whether it’s raining really hard or it’s really sunny.

Joah’s favorite flavor is Oreo Mint. He says that it’s unique and attracts new customers!

Joah delivers his milkshakes on his e-bike. On average, people donate $6.50 per milkshake.

Scholastic: What math do you use to run your business?
Joah: At the beginning, I had a hard time figuring out how to price my milkshakes. I was charging $3 each, but then I calculated that it actually cost me that much to buy the ice cream and turn it into a milkshake! So I went up to $5. I don’t charge for my labor, because otherwise they’d be really expensive. I can spend an hour biking to deliver the milkshake. It would be $20 if you wanted to order one milkshake!

Now I suggest a donation of $5, and some people donate more and some less. It’s a nice system that allows people to be flexible.

Scholastic: What advice do you have for other kidpreneurs?
Joah: You just have to start! If you have an idea but you don’t take it anywhere, then it’s not going to get anywhere. But if you have an idea, even if it’s a small idea, it can grow.
