Pokémon Gogh!
The Pokemon Company International via Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam
The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam displays many of the Dutch artist’s iconic works, including self-portraits and paintings of sunflowers. A recent exhibit showcased some new subjects: Pokémon characters!
The museum had artists create six new paintings based on Vincent Van Gogh’s masterpieces. Each painting includes characters from the video games, like Pikachu and Snorlax. “The museum is constantly looking for ways to engage new generations based on their experiences and interests. We hope to welcome new people who might not have otherwise encountered the Van Gogh Museum,” says a museum spokesperson.
Not only was it a fun way to get to know the artist but it also seemed like a natural fit. Van Gogh was inspired by Japanese art, and Pokémon come from a Japanese company with some characters based on Japanese mythology!
It costs 19 euros to visit the Van Gogh Museum. If you took 5 friends, how much would it cost in U.S. dollars? (Hint: 1 euro = $1.10) Record your work and answer on our Numbers in the News answer sheet.
