Evaluating Expressions
Find the number of each type of ant in the picture. Then use the values you found to evaluate the expressions below. Record your work and answers on our answer sheet. Each variable represents the following:
q = number of queen ants
Queens lead the colony and lay eggs.
w = number of worker ants
These female ants take care of the nest.
d = number of drone ants
These male ants gather food and care for the eggs.
q + w =
2d – 5w =
4q – 3(d – w) =
d ÷ 2 x (wd + 5) =
A variable is a symbol or letter used to represent an unknown quantity.
When you are given numerical values for variables, you can evaluate an expression by replacing each variable with its numerical value. Then use the order of operations to solve.
Evaluate x + 2y when x = 5 and y = 4
x + 2y = 5 + 2(4) = 5 + 8 = 13
