There’s some good news for Atlantic puffins: Their population has increased for the second year in a row. These seabirds with colorful bills nearly became extinct on the Maine coast in the early 1900s. Since then, biologists have been hard at work helping boost their numbers by relocating eggs and playing sounds to encourage the birds to nest in safe locations.

The birds did so well the past two years in part because they weren’t too picky about what they ate. They switched from herring, their preferred meal, to other species like haddock and redfish with no problem.
