One Fast Robot

Cassie the robot’s extra-long legs help it go fast!

This robot is all leg—and that makes it superfast. It’s named Cassie after the speedy cassowary bird. Cassie broke the Guinness World Record for fastest robot last September, running the 100-meter dash in 24.73 seconds. (Usain Bolt holds the record for humans, running 100 meters in 9.58 seconds.)
Cassie uses machine learning to analyze its movement and decide how to control its limbs. Engineer Jonathan Hurst says it’s hard getting the body of the robot to work together with the machine learning software that helps it decide how to move. But Hurst’s team is excited to keep experimenting!
