Alena takes science classes at Oakwood University in Alabama.
Alena founded Brown STEM Girl in 2020.
Many 13-year-olds are in eighth grade and preparing for high school. But not Alena Analeigh Wicker. She’s earning two college degrees in life sciences, and she was accepted to medical school last May. Alena is the youngest Black student ever to be accepted to medical school!
Alena says she’s a normal kid who is extremely disciplined and has excellent time-management skills. She enjoys watching movies, playing soccer, and hanging out with friends. But Alena doesn’t stop there. In 2020, she started an organization called Brown STEM Girl. Its mission is to increase opportunities for girls of color who are interested in careers in science, technology, engineering, and math.
Alena will start medical school in the fall of 2024 when she’s 15. That’s 3 more than half of x, the average age of an incoming medical student. Write and solve an equation to find x. Record your work and answer on our Numbers in the News answer sheet.
