Each winter, about 15 million tourists travel to Harbin, a city in northeast China. Since 1963 the city has hosted the Harbin Ice Festival, which is open from late December through February. It’s the largest festival of sculptures made entirely of snow and ice. Visitors will encounter delicate ice lanterns, an icy variety show, 980-foot-long snow slides, and more ice-themed fun.

In early winter, workers chop hundreds of 1,500-pound blocks of ice from a nearby river. Then more than 100 artists from around the world arrive to carve a temporary wonderland of frozen sculptures and structures!
