Meet the Voice of Yi

Chloe Bennet voices Yi, the lead character in Abominable. It’s the newest movie from Dreamworks, which hits theaters on September 27. Scholastic MATH spoke to Bennet about her upcoming role and how voice acting is different from live acting.

Why were you excited to play Yi?

Yi isn’t obscured by societal norms and expectations. She is the type of character I longed to see on screen growing up, and I’m so proud to be able to help bring her to life.

How do you relate to your character, Yi? Are you similar to her in any way?

Yi is me! I was that teenage girl living in Shanghai with her grandmother. So much of her journey mirrors my own:  her independent nature, how she learns to deal with grief, her rejection of societal norms, etc. Many people, young and old alike, will be able to relate to her story.

What’s the difference between live acting, like you do in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and voice acting?

There’s a distinct vulnerability to voice acting. Without the sets, costumes, hair & makeup, you lose all the visual cues that help an actor to embody and identify with a character, making voice acting a much more imaginative and personal journey. Though, it was nice to be able to work in sweats versus a superhero costume for a change!

Whats one thing you want people to know about Abominable?

Just one thing!? There is so much I want to say about this beautiful story that will take you on a magical tour of the Chinese landscape, but one of the most important elements of this film is in the power of honest representation in storytelling. Having a largely female-driven team, with writer and director Jill Culton and producers Suzanne Buirgy and Peilin Chou at the helm has allowed for a more dynamic portrayal of these strong female characters seen in the film. It demonstrates the importance of affording women the opportunity to have input into their own stories.

What does it mean to you to see epic animated movies like Abominable that feature Chinese characters and culture?

I think it’s about time! Being raised Chinese, I’ve always been fascinated by the culture and the beauty of the country itself. I’m really excited for people all around the world to experience a piece of that and to learn something new, through such a fun exploration across Chinese landscapes and landmarks. It’s hard not to want to run through the Canola Fields or eat a pork bun after seeing this movie!
