Expensive Art

Jeff Koons

This gleaming metallic rabbit set a new world record. Jeff Koons’s Rabbit, a futuristic-looking shiny silver sculpture, sold for $91.1 million at a New York City auction house in May. It’s the most expensive piece of art sold at auction that was made by a currently living artist.

There are four identical versions of the 3-foot-tall sculpture. The one sold at auction is now owned by an individual. The other three are owned by two museums in the U.S. and one museum in Qatar.

Koons is known for his playful sculptures of giant balloon-animal dogs and inflatable pool toys. But experts agree that Rabbit is his best work.
