Marvel’s Hero Project turns incredible kids into comic book heroes

Meet Hailey Scheinman, the newest Marvel Comics hero. She’s your typical 14-year-old girl: She loves Iron Man and Captain America and wants to go to space one day. But Hailey also wants to make the world a better place for people with disabilities. She’s one of 20 real-life super heroes in the new series Marvel’s Hero Project, which streams exclusively on Disney+. Hailey’s episode airs this month.

Hailey’s origin story begins with her twin sister, Livy, who has epilepsy and cerebral palsy. Epilepsy causes seizures, or uncontrolled movements and behaviors. Cerebral palsy affects Livy’s movement and causes muscle weakness. “We needed to fund her physical therapy,” Hailey says. “I didn’t understand the hardships she was going through, but I always wanted to help her.”

"I didn't understand the hardships she was going through, but I always wanted to help her," says Hailey.

So Hailey began making and selling bracelets and paintings to raise money for Livy’s treatments. As time went on, Hailey and her family decided to use the money they raised to help more kids with epilepsy. They created Livy’s Hope, a community dedicated to giving back.

In 2016, they partnered with the Epilepsy Foundation to start a national fund-raiser called Lemonade for Livy that takes place every July. Hailey also created the Kids Crew, where kids volunteer with the epilepsy community. “We’re helping people learn how to be more accepting of others,” she says.

FINDING AREA WITH FRACTIONS

Comic book pages are made up of panels. Each panel is a single illustration showing one moment in the story. The area within each panel is the amount of space artists have for that drawing. For a rectangular panel, you can find its area by multiplying its length by its width. These measurements typically include fractions.

EXAMPLE

An artist sketches a panel with a length of 3 inches and a width of 4 inches. What is the area of the panel?

STEP 1

Change each number to an improper fraction by multiplying the whole number by the denominator and adding the result to the numerator.

STEP 2

Multiply the numerators and the denominators.

STEP 3

Change your answer back to a mixed number and simplify.

So the panel has an area of 15 5/6  square inches.
