Real-Life Heroes

Marvel’s Hero Project turns incredible kids into comic book heroes

Disney+

Meet Hailey Scheinman, the newest Marvel Comics hero. She’s your typical 14-year-old girl: She loves Iron Man and Captain America and wants to go to space one day. But Hailey also wants to make the world a better place for people with disabilities. She’s one of 20 real-life super heroes in the new series Marvel’s Hero Project, which streams exclusively on Disney+. Hailey’s episode airs this month.

Hailey’s origin story begins with her twin sister, Livy, who has epilepsy and cerebral palsy. Epilepsy causes seizures, or uncontrolled movements and behaviors. Cerebral palsy affects Livy’s movement and causes muscle weakness. “We needed to fund her physical therapy,” Hailey says. “I didn’t understand the hardships she was going through, but I always wanted to help her.”

Meet Hailey Scheinman. She’s the newest Marvel Comics hero. In many ways, Hailey is a typical 14-year-old. She loves Iron Man and Captain America. She wants to go to space one day. But right now she’s working on a different goal. She wants to make the world a better place for people with disabilities.

Hailey is one of 20 real-life super heroes in a new series called Marvel's Hero Project. It streams exclusively on Disney+. Hailey's episode airs this month.

Hailey's origin story begins with her twin sister, Livy. Livy has epilepsy and cerebral palsy. Epilepsy causes seizures, or uncontrolled movements and behaviors. Cerebral palsy makes Livy's muscles weak. Physical therapy sessions help her get stronger, but they’re expensive. "I didn't understand the hardships she was going through, but I always wanted to help her," says Hailey.

So Hailey began making and selling bracelets and paintings to raise money for Livy’s treatments. As time went on, Hailey and her family decided to use the money they raised to help more kids with epilepsy. They created Livy’s Hope, a community dedicated to giving back.

In 2016, they partnered with the Epilepsy Foundation to start a national fund-raiser called Lemonade for Livy that takes place every July. Hailey also created the Kids Crew, where kids volunteer with the epilepsy community. “We’re helping people learn how to be more accepting of others,” she says.

Hailey’s super-heroic acts of kindness caught the attention of Marvel’s Hero Project, which features kids making a difference in the world. Each kid stars in their own Marvel mini-comic, which means they’re forever part of the comic publisher’s cast of super heroes. You can check out all of the digital comics at Marvel.com/HeroProject.

Even though she relates to her favorite super heroes, Hailey doesn’t think of herself as one. She’s just someone trying to help others. Still, Hailey says, “I hope kids are inspired. It doesn’t matter who you are or how old you are, if you want to put the work in to make a difference in the world, then you can be a hero.”
