Made of Tape
Courtesy of Nasa Funahara
Japanese artist Nasa Funahara puts her own spin on classic works of art. She carefully recreates famous masterpieces by Vincent van Gogh, Leonardo da Vinci, and others. But she doesn’t work in paint or ink. Her colorful creations are made with tape!
Washi is a special type of tape made from traditional Japanese paper. There are thousands of different patterns, and Funahara has collected rolls for years. To make one of her pieces, Funahara carefully layers tapes of different colors and patterns to match the key shapes of the original piece.
She also makes original art out of tape collage, including cute hedgehogs and bright crystals.
A roll of washi tape costs 300 Japanese yen. Funahara has 450 rolls of washi tape. If 1 yen equals $0.0091, how much did it cost to buy the tape in dollars? Record your work and answer on our Numbers in the News answer sheet.
