Technology From Trash

Arnaud Hulle

When you get a new computer, you probably don’t think about where your old one ends up. But electronic waste like discarded phones, computers, or even refrigerators poses serious environmental problems. Much of the e-waste produced around the world ends up in Africa. But a lab in the West African country of Togo has found an innovative way to recycle the e-waste.

WoeLab, founded by architect Sénamé Koffi Agbodjinou, has transformed e-waste into the first 3-D printer made in Africa. The team uses old computer frames and other tossed-out materials to create the machines.

Agbodjinou sends some of his printers to local schools in Lomé, the capital city of Togo. So far 10 schools are participating. He hopes to get the printers into more schools “so that children can learn to use technology,” he says.
