This Dress Is Green?
The glittering Met Gala is one of New York City’s biggest cultural events. Every year, fashion-lovers ooh and aah at the glamorous dresses worn on the red carpet at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. But this spring, some dresses drew attention because they were eco-friendly.
Emma Watson, who played Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter films, was one of the celebrities who wore an environmentally conscious outfit. Her dress, designed by Calvin Klein and Eco-Age, was made entirely from sustainable and recycled materials—even the zippers! Recycled products usually require less energy and fewer natural resources to make than new products. Her “dress” is actually made of three parts—a top, trousers, and a skirt—all of which Watson plans to rewear. Since last year, Watson has vowed to wear only sustainable fashion to red carpet events.
The fabric in Watson’s dress (pictured) contained 3.2 kilograms of Newlife yarn, which is made from recycled plastic. It takes 46 kilowatts of energy to produce 1 kg of regular yarn, but only 12 kilowatts to produce the same amount of Newlife yarn. How much energy was saved in making Watson’s dress using recycled Newlife yarn, compared with regular yarns?
