Pokémon GO to the Rescue

The hit game Pokémon GO takes players to real-world sites where they hunt for the virtual creatures of the Pokémon world. Lately, though, players across the country are catching—and saving—real-life animals in need.

In Rochester, New York, a man hunting Pokémon found several ducklings trapped in a storm drain. Players in Houston, Texas, found a cage full of hamsters and baby mice abandoned at a Pokéstop, an in-game place that corresponds to an interesting real-world place. A group playing the game in Safety Harbor, Florida, spotted a manatee tangled in a rope. In each of these cases, the players got the animals the help they needed.

“Pokémon GO just might save a lot more animal lives,” said a Houston resident in a post to a Pokémon GO Facebook group.
