World’s Longest Bug!
What has six legs, two antennae, and is roughly 1.5 times the length of your keyboard? The world’s longest insect! Measuring 24.6 inches long, the record-breaking bug was discovered in 2014 on a mountain in southern China.
Scientist Zhao Li first heard about the giant stick insect from locals. After spending six years tracking one of the bugs down, Zhao brought the stick insect to the Insect Museum of West China, where he worked. The scientists there analyzed it and realized it was different from the nearly 3,000 known species of stick insects. They declared it a new species and named it after Zhao. The mammoth insect is now officially the world’s longest. It beat the previous record-holder—a Malaysian stick insect—by 2.3 inches.
What is the length in feet of the previous record-holder, the Malaysian stick insect, rounded to the nearest hundredth?
