Social and emotional learning (SEL) refers to helping students develop nonacademic skills, namely helping children better understand their emotions and build empathy for others. Research has shown that students exposed to SEL programs have healthier attitudes and behavior, exhibit improved social and emotional skills, and perform better academically.
In Scholastic MATH, we embed social and emotional learning into every story, so your students are always learning to empathize with others, maintain relationships, manage emotions, and make responsible choices. Every story is intentionally crafted to champion inclusion and support student empowerment and equity with math.
Some lesson plans in our Teacher's Guides also include SEL prompts that you can use with your students. Each SEL prompt is denoted by this symbol .
