NEWS QUESTION OF THE WEEK
Presidential Party
The U.S. will celebrate a holiday popularly known as Presidents' Day on Monday, February 20. But where did the holiday come from? And what exactly are we celebrating?
The federal holiday is not actually named "Presidents' Day," but "Washington's Birthday." George Washington, the nation's first president, was born on February 22, 1732. In the 1800s, his birthday was an annual celebration, but it wasn't until 1885 that it became an official federal holiday celebrated on February 22. In 1968, Congress passed legislation so that federal holidays would always be observed on Mondays.
Since 1971, when the bill went into effect, President Washington's Birthday has been celebrated on the third Monday in February. Even though most people refer to the holiday as Presidents' Day in honor of all our leaders, the only U.S. President to have an official federal holiday is President Washington.
QUESTION: How many times has President Washington's Birthday been celebrated since the bill stating that federal holidays would always be observed on Mondays went into effect (not including this year)?
